Down To The River To Pray MP3 Download

Several songs tell of going down in the valley to pray. The valley seems to the colored Christian the proper place for all prayer save that of ecstatic fervor; and that fervor voices itself in song rather than in prayer. Prayer, to the negro, was so commonly associated with the thought of trouble that often had no other outlet, that all the drapery of the valley seemed to fit its mental association (Barton, 1899, p. 4).

In some versions, "in the river" is replaced by "to the river". The phrase "in the river" is significant, for two reasons. The more obvious reason is that the song has often been sung at outdoor baptisms (such as the full-immersion baptism depicted in O Brother, Where Art Thou?). Another reason is that many slave songs contained coded messages for escaping. When the slaves escaped, they would walk in the river because the water would cover their scent from the bounty-hunters' dogs. Similarly, the "starry crown" could refer to navigating their escape by the stars. And "Good Lord, show me the way" could be a prayer for God's guidance to find the escape route, commonly known as "the Underground Railroad."

Stars 04:15 lyrics buy track If I played you through a dirge, could you whisper me the wordsof the chorus that I warned you about? It's a tune that I think you could find in that bookthat you don't let me touch or take out.I could swear that your pictures wouldn't fade in my handsand your spine wouldn't break at my touch,I could tell you all the lies that you want, all the time if you want, all the time - it's not much.Because I sold all my hearts to a man who lives on the way to the church...When you feel in the wind there's a song, black as sin;on that day you will know, you will see. There were young boys who believed in a place to believein the stars and the sea and the rain;It began with a note from a book, left alone in a caveno one else dares to stay. Then I sold out my loves to a million treesthat don't grow any leaves...When he's down on his knees, and he begs and he pleads,on that day you will know you are he.Because you sold all your hearts to a man who liveson the way to the church...All the seas and the stars that you pray to don't believethat you are what you say you should be.All the seas and the stars that you pray to don't believethat you are what you say you should be. 2.
